Ref: P4685 - Cottage in Western Australia Australia
Morby Cottage
Old York Road, Northam 6401
Built in 1836 by one of Northam's first families the Morrells, Morby Cottage stands as an excellent tribute to the spirit of the district's early pioneers. From the crudest of materials John Morrell, an Englishman who arrived in Western Australia in 1831, shaped his first farmhouse. A home which proved to be the hub of the cottage proved to be the centre from which the original Northam townsite grew and was the first school and church in the area. It is believed the first music in the Avon valley was heard on a violin played by John Morrell (on display). Its windows were the first in the Avon Valley to be covered by glass and at one stage the house served as the centre of flour, cheese and milk production. From its original stone floors to mud brick walls, Morby Cottage has been well preserved and is a good example of the architecture of the time. The cottage today is now under the care of the Morby Cottage Management Committee the building is lovingly restored. Many of the Morrell family heirlooms have been returned to their original home. In 1987 the cottage went under a major renovation costing some AUD32,000. Entrance fee is a gold coin donation.
